    Stop the Seal Hunt
    01:47
"Canada's annual seal hunt is the largest slaughter of marine mammals on the planet. Every year, hundreds of thousands of baby seals are killed so that their skins can be made into coats, collars, cuffs, and trinkets. More than 330,000 seals were killed last year alone. "

Canadian Seal Hunt Kills Hundreds of Thousands of Baby Seals
    00:30
Humane Society of the United States Calls for Boycott of Canadian Seafood. In the 1970s, the United States banned seal products but tragically a cruel slaughter continues in Canada every year. Hundreds of thousands of baby seals are clubbed and shot to death annually for their fur. This practice is not without profound ramifications for the animals. In 2001, an independent veterinary panel studied Canada's commercial seal hunt. They concluded that the seal hunt results in considerable and unacceptable suffering. They noted that in 42 percent of the seals examined there was not enough evidence of cranial injury to even guarantee unconsciousness at the time of skinning. The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) called for a boycott of Canadian seafood and it is working. The European Union looks set to ban seal products too. Now is the time to join...

    Seal hunting or sealing
    02:56
Seal hunting or sealing is the personal or commercial hunting of seals. Long prized for their hide and as a food source by indigenous societies, seals were severely diminished in numbers once commercial sealing became a major industry. They are still hunted today, though regulations are comparatively strict, and the images from seal hunts have become famous symbols for conservation and animal cruelty activists.

Canadian Seal Hunt - International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW)
    02:16
In 1969, the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) was founded to campaign against the commercial seal hunt in Canada. In the 1980s IFAW was instrumental in securing a series of major victories. These led to a ban on whitecoat (newborn harp seal) and blueback (young hooded seal) pelts into Europe. As a result, the number of seals killed was drastically reduced. The hunt, however, did not end thanks to government subsidies. IFAW continues to fight to save the seals by campaigning in Canada and bringing international journalists and politicians to the ice each year. We are also working to enact bans on all seal products across Europe. Each day during IFAW's Seal Hunt Watch - which starts nears the end of March - our team of observers will bring you videos and podcasts of Canada's seal hunt straight from the ice. If it happens out here, you'll know about it. Warning: videos may contain graphic scenes of cruelty to animals. Viewer discretion is strongly advised.
